How to Extend an Exit Re-Entry Visa from Abroad

If your exit and re-entry visa is about to expire while you are still abroad, it can often be extended online before it lapses. This guide explains who can extend it, how it is done through Absher or Muqeem, and the limits to be aware of.

The quick answer

Your sponsor or employer can usually extend the visa online via Absher or Muqeem before it expires, subject to your Iqama still being valid. A per-month extension fee applies. Act before the return-by date — extending is far easier than fixing an expired visa.

Where the extension is done

Extensions are processed through the same official platforms used to issue the visa. The account holder, usually the sponsor, carries out the steps.

1

Via Absher

Absher is the main government portal for residents and citizens.

  1. Go to the Absher portal at absher.sa and log in with your username and password, or register through the Nafath app.
  2. Open the 'My Services' section and choose 'Services'.
  3. Select 'Reports' and then 'Documents' (or 'Alien Control').
  4. Your Iqama details, including the expiry date, will be displayed on screen.

2

Via Muqeem

Muqeem is the platform used by establishments and sponsors.

  1. Visit the Muqeem platform at muqeem.sa.
  2. Log in, or use the public inquiry option if your sponsor has enabled it.
  3. Enter your Iqama number, and if asked, your passport number, date of birth or expiry date.
  4. Submit the form to see your Iqama validity and status.

Rules and limits to know

An extension depends on your Iqama being valid for the new period. If the Iqama itself is close to expiry, that has to be sorted first, because the travel visa cannot outlast your residency.

There is a per-month extension fee, and it must be done before the current visa expires. Once it has expired, you are no longer extending — you are dealing with an expired visa, which is a harder and slower problem.

If it has already expired

If the return-by date has passed while you are abroad, contact your sponsor immediately. Returning will generally require new travel rights to be arranged from inside the Kingdom on your behalf.

Keep records of every step and payment. Clear documentation speeds up a situation that can otherwise drag on and disrupt your return.

Frequently asked questions

Can I extend it myself from abroad?

Usually the sponsor or employer holds the account that issues and extends the visa. Coordinate with them; some may delegate access, but the responsibility sits with the sponsor.

How long can I extend for?

Extension length is limited by your Iqama validity and the visa rules. The portal will show the maximum available period and the fee before you confirm.

Where can I find official information?

Always rely on the official government portals such as absher.sa and moi.gov.sa for the most accurate, up-to-date information about your residency.
