Check Iqama by Border Number
When you first arrive in Saudi Arabia, your Iqama has not been issued yet — but you are given a border number (also called the visa or entry number) that you can use to track your status in the meantime. This guide focuses on the border-number route: what it is, when to use it, and how to check with it.
A border number is the identifier you receive on entry to Saudi Arabia, before your Iqama is issued. It is typically a 10-digit number starting with 3 or 4. While your Iqama is being processed, you can use the border number on platforms like Muqeem and the MOI portal to track your status, until your Iqama number takes over.
What a border number is
The border number (also called the visa number or entry number) is issued when you cross into the country. It exists to identify you during the window between arrival and the issuing of your Iqama, which can take some weeks. During that period, it is your main reference number for status checks.
Once your Iqama is issued, the Iqama number becomes your primary identifier and you will use that from then on. The border number is essentially a temporary stand-in for new arrivals.
How to check using your border number
While your Iqama is processing, these platforms can accept the border number for status checks.
Via Muqeem
Muqeem is the platform used by establishments and sponsors.
- Visit the Muqeem platform at muqeem.sa.
- Log in, or use the public inquiry option if your sponsor has enabled it.
- Enter your Iqama number, and if asked, your passport number, date of birth or expiry date.
- Submit the form to see your Iqama validity and status.
Via MOI (Ministry of Interior)
MOI (Ministry of Interior) is the Ministry of Interior e-services portal.
- Open the MOI e-services portal at moi.gov.sa.
- Switch the language to English from the top menu if needed.
- Go to 'E-Services' and then the 'Passports' (Jawazat) services.
- Choose the query service, enter your Iqama number and the verification code, then submit.
Moving from border number to Iqama number
The border number is only relevant until your Iqama is issued. Keep an eye on your status during this period, and once the Iqama is active, switch to using your Iqama number for all future checks — it is the 10-digit number starting with 2.
If your border-number checks stop returning useful information, that often means your Iqama has been issued, so try looking up your new Iqama number instead.

Frequently asked questions
How many digits is a border number?
It is typically a 10-digit number starting with 3 or 4, distinguishing it from the Iqama number, which starts with 2.
How long do I use the border number?
Only until your Iqama is issued, which can take a few weeks after arrival. After that, use your Iqama number.
My border number returns nothing
It may mean your Iqama is now issued. Try checking with your new Iqama number, or use Muqeem with your passport number.
Can I check this for free?
Yes. Checking your status through the official government portals is free of charge. You only pay when you carry out a paid transaction such as a renewal.
Do I need an Absher account?
Not always. While Absher is the most complete option, several checks also work through the MOI and labor ministry portals without a personal Absher login.
What details do I need?
Usually your Iqama number is enough. Some portals also let you search using your passport number, border number, date of birth or other details.
